Eight Rules for Writing Fiction...

Eight rules for writing fiction:

1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.
2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.
3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.
4. Every sentence must do one of two things — reveal character or advance the action.
5. Start as close to the end as possible.
6. Be a sadist. Now matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them — in order that the reader may see what they are made of.
7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.
8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.

Bryce-A-Roni

My buddy Bryce game me some crap about not posting as often as I should. I took my camera to school and snapped a few pics of what I've been drawing lately. Happy Bryce?

I've been having a lot of trouble getting the WHOLE figure down on the page. I'm not really sweating it though. I feel like my slowing down and appreciating the model has made me...well...slower! But I am recording what I see more accurately now. And each week I'm getting a bit more down on the page than last week.

I think it's really a matter of editing...and elaborating...and choosing. So at this point I need to learn how to do these things. The more I practice them, the faster I'll get.

While these aren't some of my best drawings, I felt that I hadn't posted some of my work in a while, so I picked these few favorites. I've been pushing full steam on my thesis, so I really don't want to post anything until it's close to finished.

Incidentally, the maquette is the main character from my thesis. I have to go back and re-sand him to smooth out some rough parts, but he's almost done so I thought I'd post a pic anyways ;)

I'm busy working on my thesis, but I do find time to look for inspiration!

At the time of writing this, they just put up a great breakdown of the Kung Fu panda opening title sequence. Great place to learning about storyboarding for sure!
